In-House Laboratory

At The Animal Doctors, we have a complete in-house laboratory, equipped to perform simple and complex tests, ranging from serum biochemistry, full blood counts, electrolyte and blood gas measurements, hormone levels (cortisol levels and thyroid levels), rapid antigen and antibody tests kits (including Parvovirus, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus or FIV and Feline Leukaemia Virus or FeLV, Distemper, Canine and Feline Heartworm, Feline Coronavirus), blood smears, faecal examinations, microscopy and blood typing.

We can also perform urinalysis and urine sediment exams to check for occult urinary tract infections or crystalluria. In addition, we can perform measurement of urine protein to allow for early diagnosis of renal diseases. Most blood test results are available on the same day and many are available within half an hour, which facilitates prompt diagnosis especially in emergency situations. Organ failures can be detected early and management regimes instituted. Monitoring organ function is also made easy with blood tests.

Specialised blood tests and histopathology services not available as in-house tests at our clinic are sent to external veterinary laboratories.

Diagnostic Imaging

Digital radiography - Our high output generator x-ray machine allows us to take high quality images for quick diagnosis of many medical and surgical conditions in the small animal. We are able to take images of diagnostic quality for many different sizes of animals, ranging from hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, turtles, dogs and cats. Our portable ultrasound machine also allows us to investigate conditions of the thorax and abdomen without the need for invasive procedures. Both combine to allow us to reach a quick diagnosis.

If required, specialist interpretations of radiographs by Veterinary Imaging Associates in Sydney, Australia can be obtained, usually within 24 hours of taking of a digital radiograph (x-ray) at our clinic.

Hospital Facilities

Our hospital cages are kept separate from animals with infectious diseases. All animals on an intravenous drip are maintained with continuous infusion pumps. Our nurses also ensure that animals in hospital are kept dry, clean and comfortable throughout their stay. Nasal oxygen and feeding tubes are also available for our critical care patients. Dedicated isolation rooms and cages for animals with infectious diseases and are in need of quarantine. They are separated from other in hospital patients.

Surgery Suite

Our surgery suite is used mainly for surgeries requiring a clean, sterile environment. Surgical equipment is sterilised using a high pressure steam autoclave. All animals under general anesthesia are monitored continuously using monitoring equipment. Constant measurements of heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and carbon dioxide excretion are recorded. If addition, continuous ECG and temperature monitoring is used if needed. We perform both soft tissue and basic orthopaedic procedures.

Radioactive (I-131) Therapy

At The Animal Doctors, we are the first facility in Singapore to have a licensed radiation ward. Used specifically for the treatment of hyperthyroidism in cats, radioactive iodine can be administered safely in cats to cure this debilitating disease. Traditionally, cats require a lifetime of oral medication and constant monitoring of this condition which can be fatal in the long run. With this treatment, hyperthyroid cats can be cured and will no longer require lifetime medications.

Equipped with full dental facilities, we offer routine dental scaling and polishing of teeth. Fast and slow speed drills allow us to perform tooth extractions with minimal trauma to soft tissue. We also perform rabbit and rodent dentals with specialized hand tools and high speed burrs and drills. At The Animal Doctors, we support the Singapore Veterinary Association statement on performing all dentals under general anaesthesia. Dentals are also performed outside of our regular surgical suite to ensure that our surgical suite remains clean and free of contamination. With the recent introduction of dental radiography, we can now obtain clear images of dogs, cats, rabbits or rodents teeth. This aids in the rapid diagnosis of dental disease and diseases of the oral cavity.
